No Rest for the Wicked: Lambda

Helllooooo, minions!

So we've got a bit of a hat trick here, three No Rest for the Wicked sessions in a row. That's scheduling weirdness for ya. (Next week will probably be Starfinder, though, just a heads up.)

So not much has happened since my last write-up, so let's just jump right in.

So where we left off, the group had just entered the garage of the Lambda facility, some sort of mad science lab up on the blackened mesa. They're in the building, and Sledge is yelling "QUENNNNNT!" at the speakers, and then this conversation (slightly paraphrased, because folks were talking over each other) happens:

Mr. Phillips: "I don't see much profit in undying vendettas."

Thirt33n: "Undying vendettas are quite profitable."

Mr. Phillips: "Yeah, for you."

Thirt33n: *Awesome Face*

But then this conversation gets into how Mr. Phillips also profits off of undying vendettas as well as a comparison of various gun brands. At one point Mr. Phillips mentions to Sledge that when they take down Quent and go back and start telling the story of what a hero he is, they might work out a deal where Sledge gets to wear a Tediore patch or something.

Then, kind of out of the blue, B-light pitches the idea for a hammer with a gun in it. Like, there's a gun in the head of the hammer that goes off when you hit the thing. Mr. Phillips says he'll put his best men on it, and B-light is extremely enthusiastic about the possibility, but between you and me I'm not sure Mr. Phillips was being entirely sincere. But this segues into a slightly-longer-than-necessary tangent about what sorts of stuff different brands of sledgehammers would do in the Borderlands universe.

So anyhow, there's two doors leading out of the garage. One's labeled "Labs," and one is labeled "Staff." The hole that Thirt33n burned into the wall last session leads into the hallway leading off to the labs, and Sledge pokes his head in there and listens. He can hear the clicking of shardcrabs, suggesting that's what they have ahead of them there.

Rather than plunging into the shardcrab room, they go into the 'staff' area instead, and after walking through a dingy tunnel with pipes and stuff running through it, they come out in some barracks full of heavily-armed dudes. Quent gets on the PA and yells "Kill them, you idiots!"

Mr. Phillips responds: "I don't know why he said that, we were going to do that anyways."

So Mr. Phillips summons Hanabi-chan, B-light starts spraying down the room with corrosive weaponry... I mean, the fight is not meant to be a particularly complicated one, and it's a bit of a beatdown with nameless goons.

So there's two doors leading out of this room, now -- one is unlabeled, while the other one has some hand-drawn cartoon of some sort of chompy animal.

Thirt33n tries to sneak in, all stealthy, and check out the 'animal' room. But the door slams shut behind him, locked, and he finds himself in a room filled with cages. The cages all contain some sort of lizardy-thing, vaguely similar to a green bird-creature that's common on Minos. Like... imagine someone turning a chicken 'back' into a dinosaur but stopping at a point where it's kinda like a komodo dragon. But this is new and weird for them.

Quent cackles as the cages open. The rest of the group can't get the door open just yet, so Thirt33n is stuck in there alone. They manage to take them all out, moving from one to the next sword-first, though they do take a hit or two from sharp-edged scales actually launched at them by the creatures.

The rest of the group, back in the barracks, is being ambushed by someone coming through the other door -- three huge guys, all of them mutants, clearly themed to an element. One fire, one shock, one corrosive. B-light starts in on the corrosive one first, because that's her thing, dammit, while Sledge dives at the electrical guy with a slag-empowered fist and gets a lucky roll and just ends him.

Quent, at one point: "You know, I can't even take credit for these guys, they were cooking this up long before I got here."

B-light, upon finishing the corrosive one: "For guys cooking for so long, they seem pretty half-baked."

B-light and Mr. Phillips unload into the 'fire' guy, and there's actual flame coming out of the bullet holes. Sledge lunges at him and when his punch misses he realizes the guy's making a ticking sound with his mouth.

Then he explodes in a burst of flame.

As the group recovers and scavenges for ammo and loot, Thirt33n is in the other room. There's three other doors leading out -- one pointing back towards the front of the building (with a picture of an Erlenmeyer flask on it), and two leading further in (one with a picture of a wave, and one with a cartoon of a robot). While they're deciding which of the doors to take to go further in, Mr. Phillips is able to get Hanabi-chan to open the door between their rooms, squealing "Aaaaaand open!" in Japanese. Thirt33n immediately readies to attack before the realize who it is.

B-light: "Did you kill a bunch of defenseless animals?"

Sledge: "I doubt they were defenseless. But were they delicious?"

This segues into a conversation where it comes up that nobody in the group is sure they've ever seen Thirt33n eat or take off their mask at all.

Thirt33n goes ahead and opens up the 'robot' door while B-light opens the 'wave' door, just too curious about what that means. The rooms are dark so they don't know what to expect. Sledge follows Thirt33n into the 'robot' room and Mr. Phillips, pointing out his complicated electronics and how they might interact with water, follows.

Everyone goes into the rooms and the doors slam shut behind them. The lights come up.

B-light is standing on a walkway over an aquarium. The water is full of sharkweed, an aquatic version of dartweed, except these... these are electrified, and so is the water. Quent tells her he's not even sure what those are for, but sometimes he likes to go into that room just to watch them. (B-light admits that's actually probably pretty soothing.)

She backs up against a wall and prepares for the onslaught, gunning down the plant-creatures as they dive out of the water after him. At one point, hatches in the walls of the aquarium open, releasing a couple of extra-large monstrous-looking ones. At one point she has to stop to reload and accidentally staggers and gets a foot in the water, wiping out her own shield, and has to resort to teleporting across the room to buy herself enough space to finish them off.

Meanwhile, in the other room (these encounters are happening simultaneously), the rest of the group is in a room with a bunch of digistruct lenses. Quent informs them that he's been in touch with 'Mother' over at the Hyperion facility, and while she wouldn't loan him any Loader Bots she has sent him some defunct Hyperion combat robot designs he can use. And then the lenses light up as they begin digistructing...

...shrieking "ERADICATE! ERADICATE!" in an annoying Claptrap voice. Because, technically, that's what they are.

Sledge and Thirt33n begin teaming up on them, with Sledge channeling electricity through his punches to knock out their shields so Thirt33n can finish them off. Mr. Phillips summons Hanabi-chan, frantically telling her to 'test on the Claptraps,' and we get a few rounds of them taking out the CL4P-LEKs while new ones spawn, including a couple of 'badass' ones.

Sledge, offended by the very notion of a 'badass' Claptrap of any sort, declares that by his hand it shall no longer exist. The group teams up on it but as the last of the normal ones go down, another badass pops up. Thirt33n dives at this one with their holographic camouflage active, but it looks right at them and declares that ITS VISION IS NOT IMPAIRED. So instead of going after it with a sword, they pull out a slag SMG and use that to weaken it while Mr. Phillips takes out its shields and Sledge breaks out a corrosive rocket launcher and they destroy it with some effort.

Thanks to the magic of GM handwaving, in-character these two fight sequences wrap up at about the same time, so Quent announces over the PA "Well, that was interesting." as the doors in each room open up into one larger chamber for a big showdown...

But we'll get to that next time, as we had to leave off there.

Like I said, the next game (and associated write-up) will likely be Starfinder, but don't worry... we'll be doing this again, soon enough.
